At the sewers, Vanessa and Susan are back on their feet. The thought of finding Dylan gives them the strength to keep going. Vanessa’s knowledge, which she acquired while she was a bus driver, helps them navigate the sewers.
After what happened to Callie, Catherine worries about Axel’s booby traps. Brendan decides to let Axel out to question him. Axel does not give in to his demand. He ends up being beaten instead.

Axel’s group sends Brendan’s group out of the hospital. Vanessa is not getting any better which worries Doc.
Now at Julius’ camp, Vanessa is being dragged by the vampires. Julius’ mother notes that the vampires fear to hear. Julius comments that Vanessa could change them and that she will lead Julius to Rebecca and that Rebecca will lead him to Dmitri.
Dr. Sholomenko approaches Dmitri. Dmitri introduces to him his sister Antonasia. Dr. Sholomenko then relays a message from Julius’ camp. He says that the woman they seek exists, that she turned one of Julius’ vampire, and that Julius has already captured her.
At the hospital, the new-comers are settling in. Axel blames them for losing Vanessa. While Doc tends to the injured Roger, Axel tells her he got to find Vanessa. Brendon, the leader of the refugees, talks to Axel about their situation.

The refugees at the hospital are holding a meeting. Axel asks Sam to figure out what they are saying. With his lip-reading skills, Sam figures out their plans. Tension builds between Axel and Brendan. Doc then finds Roger covered in blood. Brendan barges in and asks what is going on. Doc answers that Roger is dead, but she tries to hide the true cause. John reveals the truth that Roger was murdered. The refugees panic and stage a coup against Axel. They lock everyone from Axel’s group in the cage, including John who helped them take control of Axel. Inside the cage, they talk about the mysterious murderer and start accusing each other.
Vanessa and Susan reach the sewer entrance. The vampires are scared to follow them down the sewer. Julius threatens to kill them if they don’t.
Brendan informs Axel’s group that they plan to exile all of them. Axel admits he is the murderer so the others will not be exiled. But Brendan does not believe him. Mohamad then confesses he did the killings. Sam tries to save Mohamad by admitting he is the killer. Mohamad promises him they will see each other again soon. Brendan and his group then banished Mohamad. Sam is heartbroken to see his friend go.
Sheema lays the citadel’s blueprint. They plot a plan to penetrate the building.
Vanessa and Susan navigate through the sewers. The vampires are not far behind. A beast kidnaps one of the pursuers.
Axel is sure Mohamad is not the murderer. Brendan also thinks the same, but he says he has to thin the herd until he gets the killer to protect his people. Mohamad, now alone and armed with nothing, runs for his life. Axel plans to get out of the cage and take everything back from Brendan’s group.
The beast closes in on Vanessa and Susan. Vanessa tells Susan to run.
At the vampires’ lair, Sheema navigates through the vents which lead her to Rebecca’s room. After witnessing something horrible, she hurries to flee unnoticed. But Rebecca has already catch her scent.
Back at the hospital, Doc still cannot believe that she is now human again. Flesh inquires as to how she is doing. Flesh tells her that she is lucky she is spared from the horrors outside the walls of the hospital. He shares how Julius likes to kill people slowly and that it was how he became to. He also talks about how brutal ancient vampires are.
Flesh wakes up from a nightmare. He sees the dead Cynthia hanging by the ceiling. His scream gets everyone on their feet and runs to his location. Everyone is shocked that Cynthia committed suicide. As Doc examines the dead body, she notices the index finger on the right hand was chopped off and is missing.
In a camp far away, vampires are enslaving humans. A fraction of the group called Resistance is planning to fight the vampires to gain their freedom. Sheema tells Campbell that she knows how to get into the vampires’ building.
Doc tells Axel that Cynthia did not commit suicide and that a killer is lurking among them. The fire alarm went off. Axel grabs a fire extinguisher and rushes to the stop the fire. Meanwhile, Vanessa is trying to open the hospital door, but she couldn’t. Mohamad arrives and offers to help her escape on the condition that she allows him to tag along. Mohamad opens the door with the code he stole from Axel’s notebook. Vanessa and Mohamad then head out the door. Axel attempts to go after them, but Doc stops him. Axel breaks the news to Sam that Mohamad took left. Sam gets scared.
Vanessa and Mohamad arrive at Vanessa’s apartment to find out what happened to Dylan. They discover that Dylan made it out alive after Vanessa died.
Axel discloses to the rest of the group that Cynthia was murdered and asks who the killer is. Nicole accuses Flesh. Flesh defends himself. John then accuses Doc and then Mohamad. Tension builds up as John screams at Sam. Axel says they cannot just pin it on Mohamad and that it could be anyone in the room.
Vanessa and Mohamad are now their way to the police station. A group of people is being attacked by ferals. Vanessa runs to their rescue. A member of the group is heavily injured. Their leader says they need a safe place to stay. Vanessa offers to take them to the hospital despite Mohamad’s opposition.
The ferals arrive at Julius’ camp and tell him that the woman they seek is near. Julius orders to capture her and kill the rest. Julius’ mother instigates that when they catch Vanessa, they will not surrender her to Dmitri. Instead, they should keep and use her for their advantage.
Brendan tells Vanessa what happened to their journey and about the rumors of safe havens down the coasts. Feeders then arrive. Vanessa volunteers to hold them and orders Mohamad to bring the group to the hospital safely and take care of the little girl Callie.
Back at the hospital, Flesh describes to the curios Sam how it was like to be a vampire. He shares how it happened and the changes he experienced, such as the increased strength, skin-thinning, heightened senses, and how his old injuries healed. Sam asks him if he misses it. Flesh could not answer.
Vanessa prepares for the vampire attack. The vampires fear her but she is outnumbered.
Mohamad and the group reach the hospital safely. Sam is happy is to see Mohamad and hugs him. Meanwhile, the vampires carry Vanessa back to Julius’ camp.
It is 2016, Vanessa is selling her blood at a blood clinic for a few extra dollars. Dylan waits for her outside. Newsflashes about a volcanic eruption near Yellowstone National Park. Meanwhile, a vampire who has stolen blood from the clinic is drinking Vanessa’s blood. He gets ill and vomits blood.
Dmitri and Rebecca await for their blood delivery. Dmitri points out that their terrified delivery boy has turned into a human. Rebecca recognizes that the reversion would pose a threat to their kind. She says it must be stopped before it is too late. She then orders Balthazar to find the source of the blood and to do what must be done.
It is Dylan’s birthday. Vanessa and Dylan arrive at their apartment. Their neighbor Susan is fighting with her boyfriend, Tommy. Vanessa kicks his ass and breaks his nose. Outside, ashes from the volcano start to fall from the sky like black snow.

Vanessa is bleeding. She tells Dylan to look for Susan, call for the police, and call his father. Before taking her last breath, she tells Dylan she loves her.
Doc opens up a cadaver bag to reveal the dead Vanessa. She notices that the lividity is unusual, the body is not cooling, and that rigor has not set in. She concludes Vanessa is not alive, but not dead either. Perplexed, she decides to conduct more examinations and blood work. She calls her sister Grace, who works for the military and tells about her findings. Grace mentions of a classified advisory from the Pentagon and requests for a copy of the results.
Military men arrive at the hospital and talk to Doc about Vanessa’s body. The sky darkens with the ashes. Another volcano erupted. When they reach Vanessa’s body, Doc explains that she is dead and not dead at the same time. The military prepares to transport the body despite Doc’s objections. But the power went off. The cloud ashes are blocking the sun. Streets are in chaos. A patient starts attacking people. Axel and the other marines are ordered to protect Sleeping Beauty until they get a secure position and transport.
Three years later, Vanessa still lies at the hospital in the same operating table. Somewhere else, Dmitri and Rebecca pay a visit to a certain doctor who conducts experiments to solve vampire sterility. The doctor says the woman (referring to Vanessa) who has the abilities of some kind could be very helpful. Dmitri declares that her existence could be the end of the vampires. Rebecca opposes that she could be the future. Dmitri orders Rebecca to find the said woman.
Back at the hospital, supplies are running out. Ted decides that he, Smith, and Gomez go back to their base which is 40 miles away, and recon with whatever weapons and ammunition they could carry. Despite Axel’s protest, they pushed through with the plan. They are outnumbered by the vampires outside the hospital. Smith tries to go back but Doc is closing the door on him. She gets bitten in the arm by one of the ferals before finally closing the door. The ferals then feed on Smith.
Inside the hospital, Axel and Doc try to cut her arm but it is too late. Axel points a gun at the distraught Doc and says she made him promise to shoot her if ever she gets bitten. But Doc changes her mind. She does not want to die. Axel helps her out, straps her down, and promises her that he will keep her safe until they find a cure. Doc then turns into a vampire.
It is 2019, three years since “The Rising” began and civilization has fallen. Only whispers of a human savior have given mankind hope. Vanessa “Sleeping Beauty” Seward lies on a hospital bed. She has been sleeping for three years now. The hospital is being attacked by a group of vampires who are on a mission to kidnap her. While everyone is busy fighting back, three vampires reach her. The group leader named Flesh takes one bite on the sleeping Vanessa. He feels ill, vomits blood, and falls to his knees. Vanessa wakes up from her three-year coma. The other two vampires attack her. She has no problem defending herself.
Thirty-six hours earlier, Axel feeds the vampire Doc with his blood. The alarms went off. A group of human survivors who are being chased by vampires is knocking on the hospital door. One of them is Ted, Axel’s comrade. Axel opens the door for them. Wendy, one of the survivors did not make it inside. One of them is severely injured. John, Wendy’s husband wants to go back outside to look for her but Axel won’t allow it.
Ted and Axel talk about what happened to Doc when Ted, Gomez, and Smitty went out. They talk about what happened to Ted during his trip. Meanwhile, the new-comers are planning on killing the vampire Doc. Mohamad steps in to stop them. Sam backs him up. John and the others retreat.
The vampire attack has begun. Axel and the rest move to action. They find Vanessa pinning a vampire on the floor. She kills him and stands up then calls for Dylan. Shocked, she asks them who they are then pass out. They then throw dead vampires on the garbage shute.
Vanessa is still aghast that she got bitten by one the vampires and nothing happened to her. She is worried about what happened to her daughter Dylan. One of the survivors blames her for the attack, saying that she was the reason for it. Axel tells her that her daughter is probably dead. Ted reveals to her that the world went to shit a couple of years ago — a fact she did not know. Ted tells her he can help her get out of the hospital so she can find her daughter. He adds that Axel is a good guy but he is just a little by the book.
Axel and Vanessa talk in the shower. She asks him what happened to her. Axel says he does not know. He does not even know she has a daughter. He says he was sent to the hospital to pick up a dead body three years ago but a volcano goes off in Wyoming and wipes out half the Western states. That thereafter, people just started killing each other and it is called “The Rising”. He reveals that half a dozen of them were dropped off at the hospital and that his orders were to protect Vanessa and the Doctor — a duty that he is still fulfilling up until now. Vanessa is curious why is anybody interested in her when she is nothing special. Axel has a theory that it has something to do with what is happening to the world.
Vanessa coerces Axel at gunpoint to let get out of the place. Ted helps her but they are stopped by Axel. Axel reveals that he knows it was Ted who stole the lock codes from his notebook and opened the hospital door so the vampires could attack. Ted then attacks Axel. Vanessa makes for a run to get out while Ted and Axel fight. Mohamad and Sam came to Axel’s rescue.
Vanessa reaches the rooftop. She sees the sky is covered with ashes blocking the sun. Ted reveals that his true intent is to deliver Vanessa to the vampires, dead or alive. He hostages Vanessa. Vanessa fights back but Ted stabs her right hand. Vanessa hits him in the eyes with the knife stuck at her hand, killing him. She pulls the knife but the wound heals instantly.
Flesh, the dead vampire emerges from the garbage shute with blood all over him. This time, he is no longer a vampire. He says it was Vanessa’s blood that turns him back to being a human.
Abraham Van Helsing is a character best known throughout many adaptations of the classic vampire story Dracula as a vampire hunter and the archenemy of Count Dracula. Let’s learn more about Abraham Van Helsing:
Where is Abraham Van Helsing from?
Abraham Van Helsing is a fictional character from Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel Dracula published in 1987. Dracula, as a novel, plays out the ancient struggle between good and evil. It is a morality tale in which the forces of light overcome the powers of darkness. Stoker named Abraham Van Helsing after himself. Stoker’s first name is Abraham, a name he shared with his father. The fact that Stoker chose this name for one of his leading characters suggests a degree of identification with that fictional person. Not only does Van Helsing shares the same first name with Stoker, but they also both have Dutch ancestry.
As for the surname, there is no known explanation as to why Stoker used “Van Helsing”. But few possibilities have been suggested. Since Stoker is familiar with Shakespearean plays as he managed the Lyceum Theatre, the surname possibly came from “Helsingor”, the Danish town in which Hamlets’ castle is located. Another possibility is “Van Helmont” who is an ancient alchemist mentioned in On Superstitions Connected with the History and Nature of Medicine and Surgery (1844) by T J Pettigrew which was one of Stoker’s known source-texts for Dracula.
Was Abraham Van Helsing a real person?
The fact that Bram Stoker might have modeled Abraham Van Helsing on a real person is unverified. While the inspiration for the character is not known, there has been some speculation that Van Helsing was based on Georg Andreas Helwing. Helwing was a real-life 18th-century Lutheran pastor from Angerburg in what was then the Duchy of Prussia (today Węgorzewo, Poland) who studied and wrote about vampires and werewolves. He was also a polymath with a keen interest in both the esoteric and scientific just like Van Helsing. He was known as a debunker of folklore.
Others suggest that Van Helsing was modeled on Arminius Vambery whom Stoker met in London. Vambery is a learned Hungarian professor and arguably, Stoker’s knowledge about vampires and the real Dracula came from him. And while these theories may seem plausible, there is no conclusive evidence to support that the character was inspired by these people.
Another theory is that Van Helsing was modeled on Max Muller. Muller is a contemporary German professor who was a specialist in religion and mythology. This theory is supported by the fact that Stoker wrote in his early notes for Dracula that he conceived of three characters who were later combined into the character of Van Helsing. One of these characters was identified as “a German professor of history” who was to be named Max Windshoeffel.
Van Helsing is an eccentric old Dutch professor, philosopher, doctor, and scientist. His knowledge is encyclopedic, ranging from Tacitus to the latest theories about hypnotism. He even hints at one point that he has a law degree, too. He is described in the novel as a philosopher and a metaphysician, and one of the most advanced scientists of his day with an open mind. And that he has “an iron nerve, a temper of the ice-brook, and indomitable resolution, self-command, and toleration”. Van Helsing is also a man of faith. He is a catholic and uses silver crucifix, sacramental bread and the Blessed Sacrament along with revolvers, knives, wooden stakes and garlic wreaths to battle Dracula. He was described at greater length than any other protagonist in the novel.
His eccentricities make him stand out as one of the most interesting and memorable characters of the novel. He is the only member of the Crew of Light — the group that hunts down Dracula — who isn’t a native English speaker. Van Helsing is also is morally righteous, religiously committed, and has well-developed, albeit ironic, sense of humor. He laughs hysterically when things seem pretty grim to everyone else. It is undeniable that Stoker put a great deal of thought into Van Helsing’s character.
How is Van Helsing related to Dracula?
Abraham Van Helsing is a vampire hunter and Count Dracula’s archenemy. He is one of the members of the Crew of Light who helped rid the Earth of Dracula’s evil. At the outset, Van Helsing was the only character who possesses a mind open enough to recognize that Dracula is a vampire. He sees the Crew of Light as “ministers of God’s own wish”. Stoker portrays Van Helsing as the embodiment of incorruptible good, the hero he recruits “to set the world free.”
In the novel, Van Helsing was called upon by his former student, Dr. John Seward, to diagnose a serious disease suffered by young Lucy Westenra. Recognizing marks upon her neck, he deduces that she is suffering from a classic case of vampirism. It turned out that she’s a victim of Dracula, a vampire Count who has begun menacing England. Van Helsing then administers multiple blood transfusions. He also prescribes Lucy with garlic and gives her a crucifix but he ultimately failed to save her life. Meanwhile, Dracula has purchased properties in and around London, with plans to distribute 50 boxes of Transylvanian soil to them to be used as graves so each property would become a safe lair.
After researching on Dracula’s weaknesses and strengths, the Crew of Light then planned to destroy Dracula to prevent further spread of evil. They visit Dracula’s lairs and place sacramental bread in the boxes of soil to “sterilize” them, preventing Dracula from further using them. The team then tracked Dracula with the help of the hypnotized Mina who has a telepathic link with Dracula. They pursued Dracula to Transylvania. Van Helsing killed the three female vampires in Dracula’s castle. In the final battle, Jonathan Harker brings his Kukri knife down on Dracula’s throat as the bowie knife of Quincey Morris simultaneously impales Dracula’s heart in the final moments of daylight and Dracula’s body finally crumbles to dust.
In the 2004 movie Van Helsing, Dracula reveals that Gabriel Van Helsing, the re-imagined version of Abraham Van Helsing, is the Archangel Gabriel and was the one who originally murdered him before becoming a vampire.
Is Van Helsing a vampire?
Abraham Van Helsing’s initial role in the novel as a helpful professor was gradually replaced with the more compelling title of a vampire hunter.
In the movie Van Helsing in 2004, he was attacked and bitten by Velkan Valerious — a werewolf. He then became a werewolf when the next full moon arrived and commences a final battle with Dracula who turned into a giant bat-like creature. Van Helsing bites into Dracula’s throat, killing him and his offsprings.
In the Van Helsing series, Abraham Van Helsing is the ancestor of Vanessa Van Helsing and Scarlett Harker and was a vampire hunter himself. He was adversaries with Dmitri, a vampire who admired and respected Van Helsing.
Why did Van Helsing kill Dracula when he was human?
Gabriel Van Helsing is a re-imagined version of Abraham Van Helsing from the 2004 action film. He is a monster hunter under the employ of the Vatican. Gabriel was known as the “Left Hand of God” and served as His messenger. At some point, Gabriel descended to earth, took on living flesh, and becomes human. Gabriel fought many great battles during his time on earth. Sometime in the 1460s, he met Count Vladislaus Dracula with whom he became close friends. But Dracula had broken the oath of celibacy of the Knights of the Holy Order. When the woman he loved was banished and killed, he tried to bring her back to life with dark magic. This forced Gabriel to kill him. Unable to deal with the guilt, Gabriel asked God to erase his memories.
Gabriel spent the next 400 years wandering the earth until one day after a battle, again with no memory, he was found half-dead crawling up the steps of the Vatican and a new adventure unfolds.
Who is Van Helsing on BBC Dracula?
The Dracula 2020 TV series released on BBC One and Netflix is based closely on the novel by Bram Stoker. The series, however, had an interesting, unique, and surprising twist. The iconic vampire hunter Van Helsing was portrayed by a woman in the character of Sister Agatha Van Helsing, which makes for one of the best introductions to the Van Helsing character in history.
Agatha is a member of St. Mary’s Convent, Budapest. She met Dracula when he arrives at the Convent following Jonathan Harker. Dracula ended up killing all the nuns except Agatha and Harker’s fiance, Mina. Dracula eventually feeds on Agatha and she was forced to tag along with him on his journey to England. In her attempts to defeat Dracula, Agatha managed to sink their ship while it approaches Whitby. Agatha died but, Dracula, however, sealed himself inside a coffin filled with his native soil as the ship sinks.
One hundred twenty-three years later, Dracula emerges from his coffin and surfaces on Whitby beach. He met Dr. Zoe Van Helsing, whom he has mistaken as Agatha. He tries to feed on her, but her blood makes him vomit as Zoe is terminally ill with cancer. Zoe aims to study the Count like her ancestor Agatha did. When Zoe drunk the Count’s blood, she began to experience Agatha’s memories until she was completely taken over by Agatha. Agatha then reveals she figured out Dracula’s weakness: his fear of death. The first season ended with Zoe/Agatha succumbing to her death while the Count feeds on her poisoned blood.
The showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, when asked how they decided to make Sister Agatha Van Helsing, explained that nuns are more or less dressed in the superhero outfit for fighting vampires. Van Helsing as a nun is, indeed, an unconventional twist.
Portrayals Throughout The Years
The character Van Helsing has been portrayed throughout the years. The first known Van Helsing was played by Edward Van Sloan in the 1931 version of Dracula from Universal. But the most famous incarnation of the character was played by Peter Cushing in the 1958 movie. Peter Cushing has played the character in numerous films and he has been identified with the role of Van Helsing more than any other actor. The character was also played by Sir Laurence Olivier in the 1979 big-screen adaptation, by Anthony Hopkins in the 1992 version, and by Mel Brooks in Dracula: Dead and Loving It in 1995. The vampire hunter also had a spin-off movie, Van Helsing, in 2004 with Hugh Jackman taking on the title role.
