Van Helsing S03E03: “I Awake” — The Elder brings Vanessa to the memory of the past. She wakes up confused and in a foreign land. She finds a girl training with a large dagger. Vanessa disarms her and pins her down. The girl tells her she is her new servant, Siobhan, and that she is Lily Van Helsing. The proud granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing and third-generation vampire hunter. Vanessa realizes that in this dream, she is in Lily’s memory of the year 1896 in Hong Kong.

Vanessa goes out for tea with the Governor’s wife, Agnes Fauntleroy. Agnes tells her their meeting is upon the request of Master Tsui, a Chinese gentleman who has ominous and important things to share with her. Agnes also shares that her father was a faithful servant of Abraham Van Helsing, so she knew Lily’s secrets. She explains the alarming situation in the city. The vampires are using the fatalities of the Bubonic Plague to hide their killings. Agnes instructs Vanessa on how to find Master Tsui.

Vanessa meets Lily’s husband, Edward. Edward thinks that vampires are merely Lily’s delusions and fantasies. He orders her to rest in her room because he cannot have her embarrass him with talk of vampires to his guest, Cyril Abernathy, the head of the East Asia Trading Company.

With Siobhan’s help, Vanessa sneaks out to meet Master Tsui. On her way, she encounters a dangerous kind of vampire. Master Tsui explains that the vampire is called a shadow walker. Shadow walkers are servants to a very dangerous ancient type of vampire, the B’ah. They move faster than a human eye can track, and they hide in the shadows. He adds that they were rarely seen inside the city. But now they are in Hong Kong. With the outbreak of Bubonic Plague outside the city, the shadow walkers come to the city for a clean supply of blood.

Master Tsui reveals to Vanessa he is also a vampire hunter, and that is why he wants to them meet. He is rather concerned as it appears she is not prepared. Master Tsui then trains Vanessa on how to fight and control her anger.

After the taxing training, Vanessa comes home to the news of Cyril Abernathy’s death. It appears that he’s been murdered by vampires. But Edward thinks that such a thing is only his wife’s hysterical nonsense. Vanessa drugs him to sleep so she could investigate.

Vanessa’s investigation leads her to a warehouse filled with shipping crates. She also finds a dead man on the floor and a Shadow Walker burning documents. The Shadow Walker tells her that coming was a mistake. He then fights Vanessa. The shadow walker manages to put a cut on her neck. “You cannot kill what you cannot see,” the Shadow Walker says. Master Tsui arrives and gives Vanessa a piece of helpful advice. Vanessa stabs the Shadow Walker in the stomach, killing him. Vanessa starts to feel her wound. She remembers that she is Lily in this dream, so she does not have her healing abilities.

Siobhan sews up Vanessa’s wound. Siobhan notices that something about Lily is different. She says she’s a little envious of the adventure her employer is having. Vanessa assures her that one day, women will have power, a voice and that they will chart their own courses and make their own decisions. Edward walks in on them. He sees Vanessa’s wound and dagger. He gets furious, thinking that his wife is having a relapse of her psychosis. Edward blames himself for her injury. “I need you to recover, Lily,” he says.  Vanessa tries to explain she not who he thinks she is, but it only makes things worse. Edward locks Vanessa and Siobhan in the room.

Edward intercepts a message from Master Tsui and goes to put a stop to her wife’s delusions. He instructs the guard that his wife and servant are not allowed to leave the room under any circumstances. Thanks to Vanessa’s clever exit strategy, she and Siobhan manage to break out. Vanessa sees Master Tsui’s message and realizes Edward is in danger. Siobhan convinces Vanessa to allow her to come along. Vanessa agrees on the condition that she waits outside. Siobhan excitedly follows Vanessa.

Master Tsui, Vanessa, and Siobhan arrive at the B’ah’s lair. Master Tsui explains that the vampires lure victims with drugs so they can feed in secrecy and darkness.

Edward is in bed with the B’ah. He is drugged but still manages to share his fear about his wife going mad. He also tells her Master Tsui’s name, and that his wife is a Van Helsing. The B’ah sees Master Tsui and Vanessa and reveals herself to them. She is thrilled to see two legacies of vampire killers. She narrates to Vanessa how Abraham almost took her head years ago. I’m here to finish what he didn’t, Vanessa answers. The B’ah says “I doubt that,” and throws a knife at Vanessa. Vanessa catches it with her hand, right before it hits her head.

Vanessa and Master Tsui are outnumbered and surrounded by the shadow walkers. “Impressive for a mortal,” the B’ah compliments Vanessa. She notices that Vanessa bleeds like a human but there is something different about her. Vanessa challenges her to come closer, but she says she will just wait for the poison to take effect. Master Tsui suggests they walk out of the place, considering the unfavorable circumstances. The B’ah grabs Edward and holds him hostage. “You run, he dies slowly, unless you die first,” she tells Vanessa. Vanessa cannot allow Edward to die. The B’ah realizes that they are in a memory created by another Elder. She asks why. “So I could learn how to destroy you.” Vanessa answers.

Vanessa and Master Tsui put up a valiant yet losing fight against the shadow walkers. Vanessa manages to turn the tide with yet another clever solution. She cuts the rope of the curtain to let the sunlight in, and the shadow walkers burn. She also tricks the B’ah to come close enough so she could stab her with her dagger. “I am certain that we will meet again, but next time, not in dreams.” The B’ah says before she completely disappears. Master Tsui mentions to Vanessa about the dark sleep of vampires. Vanessa realizes the B’ah is trying to leave China to go somewhere safe. Master Tsui, right before he dies, tells Vanessa that only the blood of the B’ah can stop the poison. It’s a relief Vanessa has the blood in her dagger.

Edward apologizes to his wife for doubting her. He vows to help her as much as he can. Agnes arrives bearing news that the ship containing a dozen of unusual crates from East Asia Trading Company has sailed to San Francisco.

Vanessa wakes up from the dream and makes it back to the asylum. The Elder is rather disappointed that she’s back alive. Vanessa decides to go to San Francisco. But first, she releases the Elder from his obligation to the Van Helsings and gives him his totem. “The more Elders there are, the greater the chance I’ll be betrayed.” She says right before plunging the dagger into his heart.

Van Helsing S02E03: “Love Bites”

It is 1936. Julius begs Mother Agatha to give him a few more days to settle his account. He says his mother is everything to him and that she’s all he’s got. But the nun warns him that if he will not pay by morning, his mother will be discharged to his care. He then talks to his bedridden mother and promises that everything will be okay.

Julius fights in a boxing arena. He loses the match, while Dmitri watches. Julius now demands payment from a man for throwing off the fight, just like what the man asked. But the man stabs him instead. Julius then falls to the ground. He asks for his mother’s forgiveness, knowing that this will be the end of him. But Dmitri arrives. Julius asks for his help. Dmitri obliges and bites Julius.

Julius, now a vampire, visits his mother. He bites her hand, turning her into a vampire. Mother Agatha enters the room. Julius tells her that God will not be taking his mother tonight, but it is still wise for the nun to pray. Julius’ mother leaps from her bed and attacks the nun.

Back to the present, Dylan is suffering. Julius offers to help, but Vanessa refuses. He insists saying he needs to atone and that he wants to protect Vanessa and Dylan. Julius explains that young vampires must feed constantly, or else they die. He asks Vanessa why she has not tuned her daughter back to being human. She can’t, Vanessa answers. Julius offers Dylan to feed on him. He swears he can’t be turned back into a vampire anymore. Dylan feeds on Julius, but his blood grosses her out. She says it tastes like rat blood.

At the Triage, Mohamad is fighting off a fever. Jolene informs Flesh and Lucky that donating blood is mandatory. Flesh is hesitant. Mohamad warns him that he cannot go around telling people what he used to be.

Doc and Axel’s journey is not turning out well. Axel tries his hardest to control his urge to feed. He does not like Doc’s idea of feeding off of her to survive.

At the Juvenile Detention Center, a group of juvenile delinquents is on their way to punish one of their members for his inability to kill a feral. A mysterious man observes them from a distance. The black young man receives ten lashes as punishment. He falls to the ground. The mysterious man enters the facility. One of the youngsters asks him who he is. He reveals his face and answers “I am Sam. Sam I am.”. Sam attacks the group. They shot him, but Sam, strong as he is, manages to trap them all in one of the rooms. Sam then finds the punished boy.

Elsewhere, Vanessa sees a man on the road trying to fix a broken van. She approaches him from behind and points an ax on his neck. “I’m not gonna hurt you, but you have to come with me.”, she said. The man agrees. She brings him to Dylan. Upon realizing that Dylan is a vampire Daniel begs for his life. Vanessa calms him down. She tries to make him understand what she is doing and promises not to kill him. But Daniel pulls out his gun and shots Dylan. Vanessa panics and quickly cuts his throat. She then feeds him to her daughter. Daniel’s kids call for him. Vanessa is in disbelief.

Back at the Triage, people are lining up to donate blood. Lucky convinces Flesh to just get it over with. Flesh says he cannot and reveals his secret to her.

Sam discovers Felix’s wounds. He orders him to take off his sweater and to lie on the floor. Sam then draws a smiley face on his shirt with blood. Now, Felix looks just like Mohamad. Sam is happy and hugs him.

Mohamad scolds Flesh for telling his secret to Lucky. Lucky, Jolene, and some armed men come to pick up Flesh for questioning. Flesh realizes Lucky has betrayed him.

Daniel’s kids still call out to him. Vanessa listens from a distance. Julius then arrives. He then realizes that Vanessa killed a person for Dylan. But Dylan needs more blood to heal. Vanessa plans to kill Daniel’s kids, as well. Julius stops her and tells her that she cannot become what he was. Vanessa orders him to take the kids somewhere safe.

Lucky visits Flesh in his cell to apologize for what she did. She tells him she does not believe the promised land in Denver. Flesh answers that Vanessa is going there, and she should go there, too. He tells her that he is never getting out of the Triage.

Axel tries his hardest to get himself together.

The trapped juvenile delinquents ask for Felix’s help. Felix opens the door. But Sam grabs one of the boys by the neck and closes the door. Sam teaches Felix to be like Mohamad.

Julius comes back for Vanessa and Dylan. Dylan is not healing. Vanessa is left with no other choice. She bites Dylan and turns her back to being human.

Lucky then rescues Flesh from his cell. Jolene catches them, but Lucky knocks her out. They then take Mohamad and run to the woods, away from the Triage.

The morning comes. Vanessa, Dylan, and Julius happily play with the snow. Dylan excitedly waits for the sun to rise. The sun rises, but it burns Dylan. Vanessa runs to Dylan and holds her while her daughter slowly turns to ashes. Vanessa’s scream of agony is so loud it can be heard from miles away. Her scream awakens a sleeping elder.

Van Helsing S01e03

On the day of The Rising, Julius creeps into a room full of sleeping junkies and feeds on one of them.  His skin burns whenever the sun hits him. Outside, the ashes from the volcano start to block the sun. Julius then lets out his hand, and for the first time, he is not burning. Now able to walk during the day, he went outside and starts biting any person he sees. One of his victims is Flesh, who turns into a vampire almost instantly and starts killing his own family.

In the present day, the survivors holed up in the hospital talk about Vanessa’s healing powers. Axel is feeding Doc his blood. Someone starts calling for anybody. It is Flesh, the vampire-now-turned-human, who they threw in the garbage chute the night before. He reveals that Vanessa’s blood turned him back to being a human. The surprised Vanessa cannot believe what Flesh just told them. She claims there is nothing special about her.

A commotion outside brings Axel, Vanessa, and the rest of the group to the rooftop. Vampires down the street are taking Wendy as a hostage. They demand that Vanessa be surrendered to them in exchange for Wendy. John, Wendy’s husband, is more than willing to make the trade. Axel, however, objects and shoots Wendy instead. John trips on the wire as he attacks Axel. The turbine that keeps the UV lights running falls on the street. Now without the hospital’s primary source of defense, Axel tells them they only have three hours to live. Axel plans to go on a trip to scavenge parts for the generator. Vanessa goes with him. They leave Mohamad and Sam in-charge.

John suggests to the group that they kill Flesh and Doc before Axel returns. Mohamad and Sam step in to protect them.

Axel and Vanessa arrive at an abandoned ferry. Axel goes underwater to retrieve the part they need. Vanessa stands as a lookout. Ferals attack them. One of them bites Vanessa, vomits blood, and then died.

Back at the hospital, the power goes off. Vampires start attacking the door. Axel and Vanessa arrive but they cannot get in. Flesh goes outside and talks to his former comrades. He tells them he is now human, and that Vanessa caused it. The vampires get scared and fled. Vanessa and Axel brought Wendy’s body inside.

After having seen what the world is like, Vanessa talks to Axel as to what could have been the fate of her daughter Dylan. She asks Flesh why he risked his life to save them. Flesh tells her how he murdered his children as soon as he turned into a vampire, and left his wife with pieces of their children all around her. He tells her how it is like to be a vampire.

After fixing the generator, Axel asks Vanessa to turn Doc back to being human again. Vanessa goes into Doc’s cage and forces her to bite. Doc refuses, so Vanessa bites her instead. Doc passes out.

The vampires who attacked the hospital arrives at Julius’ place. They relay to him what Flesh has said. Julius orders to send word to Dmitri about the news.

Just as when Axel thinks that Doc is dead, she wakes up. Doc is relieved that she is human once again.
