Van Helsing S03E02: “Super Unknown” — It is 1906. A couple arrives at Renfield House. Lord Edward Hawkins checks in his wife, Lillian, in the asylum.  Before he goes, she gives him a vial necklace and orders him to give it to their daughter for safekeeping. The nurse then asks for Lillian’s maiden name. “Van Helsing. Lillian Van Helsing. But you may call me Lily.” She answers.

Lily breaks out from her room and goes to do her mission — to kill a vampire. She comes face to face with a different kind of vampire, one with blue eyes and a strong psychic abilities. Lily fails the mission.

Back to the present day, Vanessa, Scarlett, Axel, and the Elder arrive at a cabin in the woods. They ask the man to help them get to the asylum in exchange for one of Axel’s Kit-Kat bars. He agrees to take them to the asylum in the morning. But Vanessa is not willing to wait. She points her gun at the man.

They arrive at the asylum. The Elder suddenly attacks the man. The Elder may look like Susan, but he is still a vampire. He must feed, he says. Vanessa’s eyes turn red as she smells the blood, but she manages to shake it off.

Inside the asylum, they come across a room full of sleeping vampires, which Scarlett thought are only dead bodies. The vampires wake up, but oddly enough, they don’t attack. Instead, their eyes turn blue, and they start to use their psychic powers. Axel’s head starts to hurt. Vanessa and Scarlett start killing the vampires. The vampires’ psychic powers start to affect Scarlett but do not seem to affect Vanessa. The strongest vampire gets a hold of Scarlett. To fight him off, Scarlett tries a trick she has not done before — she bites the vampire. Her bite turns him into a human.

The vampire-now-turned-human introduces himself as Dr. Karloff. He makes himself helpful. He tells them the story of Lily Van Helsing, who died in the asylum under very mysterious circumstances.

Axel talks to Scarlett about Vanessa not being herself. He worries she is becoming more vampire.

Dr. Karloff brings out old hospital records. They find out that Lily died on her first night at the asylum due to extensive brain damage. Vanessa asks where Lily is buried. Dr. Karloff leads them to the cemetery in front of the facility. Vanessa and Scarlett start digging the grave while the doctor and Axel go back to get digging tools.

The doctor leads Axel into a creepy laboratory and knocks him out. Axel wakes up being tied into a chair and with electrodes attached to his head. It turns out, the doctor was a patient at the asylum before The Rising. He is very thrilled to suck the life out of Axel as he powers up the electroconvulsive therapy machine. The current from the machine causes seizures and knocks Axel out.

While digging, Vanessa wonders why Axel is not back yet. It leads Scarlett to talk about her relationship with him. Vanessa clears out she is not interested in Axel. Scarlett then confronts Vanessa about consistently shutting her down, and asks what happened to her at Blak Tek. Vanessa confesses she does not know what is going on with her, and that something changed after the Elder bit her. Before, she drinks blood just to get stronger, but now, she craves it. “If I start to turn, you know what you have to do, right?” she asks Scarlett. Scarlett comforts her by telling her they will figure it out.

Vanessa and Scarlett find a man’s skeleton on the grave instead of Lily’s. They decide to wait for Axel and Dr. Karloff to return.

Dr. Karloff confesses to Axel that he sent Vanessa and Scarlett on a bit of a wild goose chase. Axel tricks him into telling where Lily is actually buried. Convinced that Axel will die soon in his hands, he blurts out that she is on a mausoleum in the basement. Axel then breaks free, attacks him, and crushes his head using a chair.

Axel tells the sisters about what happened to the doctor and about the mausoleum. Scarlett asks if he is okay. He jokes about almost getting a lobotomy.

Now in the basement, Axel’s and Scarlett’s head start to hurt. Axel says it is the same from upstairs but worse. Vanessa orders them to go and to send the Elder to her. Now, she has to face the thing that killed Lily alone.

Vanessa comes face to face with a new and different kind of vampire. The vampire compliments her for her strength. She reveals she is a Van Helsing. The vampire unleashes his psychic powers. Vanessa falls to her knees. “Even one with powers as great as yours will not go forward,” he says. You can’t stop me, Vanessa answers as she tries to fight him off. Vanessa plunges her knife into his chest. He pulls it out effortlessly. The Elder appears behind Vanessa. She orders him to attack. The Elder bites the vampire and rips out his throat.

Vanessa, Scarlett, and Axel open Lily’s coffin. Strangely, Lily looks like she died yesterday. Her body is perfectly preserved. With her are the Elder’s totem, a beautiful bracelet, and a large dagger. The Elder orders Vanessa to move away from the dagger. Vanessa picks it up anyway. The Elder says it has stains of blood of the B’ah, one of the great Elders that Vanessa will ever face. The Elder tells her there’s so much she has to understand, and that she is not ready to face the strength of the B’ah. Vanessa orders him to teach her. He answers that it is better that he shows her. He then reaches out for Vanessa’s head.

Vanessa wakes up in a foreign land.

Dmitri emerges from his bloody bath fully healed. Antonasia joins him. She assures him that all that he wishes, all that he desires, she will provide — even Vanessa.

Back at the citadel, the survivors are running to the woods where the resistance field hospital is located.

Vanessa and Hohamad now have Dylan. They try to escape from the citadel.

The survivors arrive at the Triage. Raul and Jolene discuss what to do next. Doc attends to one of the wounded. Jolene thanks Doc for saving a lot of people in the resistance. They talk about a town called Crooked Falls, a place that is supposedly above the clouds. Doc shares about herself. How she lost everything and everyone she cares about and about finding a purpose, a chance to start over.

A little girl arrives at the Triage. Doc sees her. It’s Callie. Doc asks her how did she make it this far alone and what happened to the others. She tells her what happened to Catherine. Callie asks about the hospital in Seattle. Doc shushes her. She tells her not to talk about the hospital, Seattle, or Axel. That whatever she knows, whatever she thinks she knows, she keeps it to herself. She made Callie pinky swear.

Mohamad leads Vanessa and Dylan into the woods. Vampires howl from a distant. Dylan howls back.

Raul shows Doc the fridge. He informs her that four pints of blood is missing. She demands that she explains why. Doc cannot. He then instructs her to keep a close eye on the fridge. Someone is not who they seem, and he is finding out who.

Vampires come howling in Vanessa’s direction. An army arrives with Antonasia. Dylan runs to Antonasia, but Vanessa stops her. Mohamad insists that Vanessa should run and take Dylan while he holds the army off. She obliges and grabs Dylan. Mohamad runs out of ammo and fights hand in hand with the army. A knife plunges through Antonia’s head before she could kill Mohamad. A mysterious ninja appears and kills the rest of the army.

Vanessa drags Dylan to a barn. Dylan begs her mother to feed her. Vanessa wants to but refuses because it could hurt her daughter.

Callie walks in the dark toward a cave in the woods. She puts a bag of blood on the ground. A vampire grabs it and then feeds on it.

Flesh and Lucky found the injured Mohamad. Mohamad narrates to Flesh what happened to Vanessa and that there’s someone else searching for her. He insists that Flesh should go find Vanessa. Flesh refuses to leave him alone to die in the woods.

Doc approaches Jolene while on guard duty. Jolene thanks Doc for saving Carl’s life. A noise startles them. It’s Callie bringing in two dead rabbits. She claims she caught them all by herself.

The next morning, Doc follows Callie to the woods. A dead rabbit lies outside the cave. Callie puts down two bags of blood in exchange for it.  Doc asks her what she is doing. Callie explains that he could not let the vampire in the cave die and that ferals would have gotten to her had he not saved her. A vampire storms out of the cave. It startles Doc. Doc brings out her rifle and warns him to back off, or else she will kill him. The vampire looks at her. It is Axel. Doc, horrified by the sight, drops her gun and runs. But Axel catches up to her. She begs him to let her go. He demands that she get all the blood and brings them to him. Doc refuses. Axel then threatens her and demands that she help him find Vanessa.

Doc takes all the blood in the fridge and puts them in a cooler. Jolene catches her and expresses her disappointment. Doc explains that she has to make amends for what she’s done and for the person she’s been. Jolene accuses her of stealing to sell the blood. She then realizes that Doc is giving them to a vampire. Doc tries to explain that she’s the reason why he became a vampire and that she can’t walk away from that. Jolene pulls her gun out and points it to Doc. Doc reveals all her lies and explains that it is the only way she knows to save herself. She walks away. Jolene cannot pull the trigger.

Vanessa wakes up and finds Dylan looking at the sun. It is not burning her. They rekindle fond memories together. A vampire howls from a distance. Dylan runs, but Vanessa tries to stop her. Dylan then cuts her mother’s throat and runs away.

Doc and Axel are on their way to find Vanessa.

Vanessa’s wound heals, and she regains consciousness. She then runs after Dylan. Dylan meets with Julius. Julius holds her hostage.

Callie tells everyone at the Triage about Doc. Raul finds out that Jolene let Doc go. He then orders the rest of the resistance to find and kill Axel and bring Doc back alive.

Flesh and Lucky decide to go to the Triage to save Mohamad instead of finding Vanessa.

A feral attacks Doc. Axel watches while she screams for help. The feral gets hold of Axel’s blood supply.

Vannesa catches up to Julius and Dylan. A ferocious fight ensues. Vanessa then ends up biting Julius. He then turns back into being a human. He thanks Vanessa for saving him.

It is 2016, Vanessa is selling her blood at a blood clinic for a few extra dollars. Dylan waits for her outside. Newsflashes about a volcanic eruption near Yellowstone National Park. Meanwhile, a vampire who has stolen blood from the clinic is drinking Vanessa’s blood. He gets ill and vomits blood.

Dmitri and Rebecca await for their blood delivery. Dmitri points out that their terrified delivery boy has turned into a human. Rebecca recognizes that the reversion would pose a threat to their kind. She says it must be stopped before it is too late. She then orders Balthazar to find the source of the blood and to do what must be done.

It is Dylan’s birthday. Vanessa and Dylan arrive at their apartment. Their neighbor Susan is fighting with her boyfriend, Tommy. Vanessa kicks his ass and breaks his nose. Outside, ashes from the volcano start to fall from the sky like black snow.

Dylan’s dad calls to greet her a happy birthday and to cancel their weekend plans. Heartbroken Dylan hides in her bedroom closet. Vanessa prepares Dylan’s cake. She then looks for Dylan. An intruder reveals his face and attacks Vanessa. Vanessa defends herself, but he is no match to the feral vampire. He bits him then falls to his knees, vomits blood, and escapes. Vanessa is bleeding. She tells Dylan to look for Susan, call for the police, and call his father. Before taking her last breath, she tells Dylan she loves her.

Doc opens up a cadaver bag to reveal the dead Vanessa. She notices that the lividity is unusual, the body is not cooling, and that rigor has not set in. She concludes Vanessa is not alive, but not dead either. Perplexed, she decides to conduct more examinations and blood work. She calls her sister Grace, who works for the military and tells about her findings. Grace mentions of a classified advisory from the Pentagon and requests for a copy of the results.

Military men arrive at the hospital and talk to Doc about Vanessa’s body. The sky darkens with the ashes. Another volcano erupted. When they reach Vanessa’s body, Doc explains that she is dead and not dead at the same time. The military prepares to transport the body despite Doc’s objections. But the power went off. The cloud ashes are blocking the sun. Streets are in chaos. A patient starts attacking people. Axel and the other marines are ordered to protect Sleeping Beauty until they get a secure position and transport.

Three years later, Vanessa still lies at the hospital in the same operating table. Somewhere else, Dmitri and Rebecca pay a visit to a certain doctor who conducts experiments to solve vampire sterility. The doctor says the woman (referring to Vanessa) who has the abilities of some kind could be very helpful. Dmitri declares that her existence could be the end of the vampires. Rebecca opposes that she could be the future. Dmitri orders Rebecca to find the said woman.

Back at the hospital, supplies are running out. Ted decides that he, Smith, and Gomez go back to their base which is 40 miles away, and recon with whatever weapons and ammunition they could carry. Despite Axel’s protest, they pushed through with the plan. They are outnumbered by the vampires outside the hospital. Smith tries to go back but Doc is closing the door on him. She gets bitten in the arm by one of the ferals before finally closing the door. The ferals then feed on Smith.

Inside the hospital, Axel and Doc try to cut her arm but it is too late. Axel points a gun at the distraught Doc and says she made him promise to shoot her if ever she gets bitten. But Doc changes her mind. She does not want to die. Axel helps her out, straps her down, and promises her that he will keep her safe until they find a cure. Doc then turns into a vampire.
